Structurally, drop cables can be single-core, double-core, or four-core, sometimes in a flat figure-8 design with central reinforcement. They often use G.657 bend-insensitive fibers, allowing tight bending (down to 20mm radius) for easy installation in buildings . Reinforcements may be FRP or metal, providing compression resistance and fiber protection. Sheaths are typically low-smoke-zero-halogen (LSZH) or flame-retardant PVC, environmentally friendly, and compatible with various connectors .
Single-Mode Fiber Optic Cables
Single-mode fiber optic cables have a very narrow core (around 9 microns), allowing only a single light path to propagate. This design minimizes signal dispersion, enabling long-distance, high-bandwidth transmission . Key types include:
- OS1: Maximum attenuation of 0.4 dB/km at 1310 nm and 0.3 dB/km at 1550 nm, suitable for distances up to 10 km at speeds up to 10 Gbps .
- OS2: Maximum attenuation of 0.3 dB/km at 1320–1550 nm, supporting distances up to 40 km at 10 Gbps, with higher bandwidth (500 MHz·km at 1310 nm) . Single-mode fibers are ideal for backbone networks, long-haul communication, and high-performance applications, whereas multimode fibers, with larger cores (50–62.5 microns), are better suited for short-distance, cost-sensitive deployments .
