Article Overview
A 144-core optical distribution box splitter divides a single optical signal into multiple outputs using passive PLC splitters, enabling efficient fiber distribution to numerous end users without active electronics.
Overview
A 144-core optical distribution box (ODC) is designed to manage and distribute optical fibers in high-density FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) networks. It typically accommodates 144 fiber cores and provides multiple slots for optical splitters, such as 1:2, 1:4, 1:8, 1:16, and 1:32 ratios, allowing a single input fiber from the OLT (Optical Line Terminal) to serve many end users simultaneously . The box also includes fiber storage (parking) to manage excess fiber length and maintain signal integrity.
Working Principle
- Passive Splitting: The ODC uses PLC (Planar Lightwave Circuit) splitters, which are passive devices that divide one optical input into multiple outputs without requiring power . Each splitter ensures uniform signal distribution to connected ONTs (Optical Network Terminals) at subscriber premises.
- Signal Distribution: The input fiber from the OLT enters the ODC and is routed to the splitters. Depending on the split ratio, the optical signal is divided into multiple fibers. For example, a 1:16 splitter converts one input fiber into 16 output fibers, each carrying a portion of the original signal .
- Centralized vs Distributed Splitting: The 144-core ODC can support centralized splitting, where multiple splitters are co-located in the cabinet for easier management and reconfiguration, or distributed splitting, where splitters are placed closer to subscriber locations for reduced fiber usage in the feeder network . Centralized splitting allows jumper reconfiguration to balance load or upgrade PON technology, while distributed splitting is more fixed but can reduce overall network cost.
- Fiber Management: The ODC provides organized routing and storage for all fibers, protecting them from bending or damage. It typically includes 64 parking slots for excess fiber and ensures that each output fiber is clearly labeled and accessible for maintenance .
Advantages
- Scalability: Supports up to 144 fibers, allowing large-scale subscriber deployment without additional OLT ports.
- Cost Efficiency: Reduces the need for dedicated fibers to each home, lowering infrastructure costs.
- Passive Operation: No power required, minimizing operational costs and maintenance.
- Flexibility: Supports multiple split ratios and centralized or distributed architectures, enabling network upgrades and reconfiguration .
Applications
The 144-core ODC splitter is widely used in high-density urban FTTH deployments, multi-dwelling units, and business districts where a single OLT port must serve many subscribers efficiently. It is compatible with GPON, XGS-PON, and other PON technologies, allowing future upgrades without major infrastructure changes .
