Article Overview

Optical fibers should be inserted through the designated cable entry holes of the distribution box, secured with grommets, and routed to the adapter panels or splice trays inside.

Fiber Entry Points

In a typical fiber optic distribution box, the optical cable enters through the trunk or interconnect cable entry hole, usually located at the bottom or side of the box depending on the model . Before insertion, a grommet or cable gland is used to protect the fiber and secure it in place, preventing movement and strain . This ensures the fiber is not damaged by sharp edges or excessive bending.

Internal Routing

Once inside the box, the fiber should be routed carefully:

  • Bending radius control clips or spools are used to maintain the minimum bend radius and prevent signal loss .
  • Fibers are directed toward optical fiber adapter panels or splice trays, where they are either terminated with connectors or fusion-spliced to pigtails .
  • Ensure the fiber length allows the front panel to be fully extended without tension, typically leaving a service loop of 10–15 cm for indoor boxes .
  • Use cable ties or Velcro straps to organize excess fiber and maintain a neat layout .

Termination and Connection

  • For mechanical splices, insert the cleaved fiber ends into the splice and lock them in the tray .
  • For fusion splices, use a fusion splicer, add a heat-shrink protector, and place the splice in the tray .
  • Connect pigtail connectors to the adapter ports on the front panel, ensuring they click securely and are labeled for future reference .

Best Practices

  • Avoid sharp bends; maintain a minimum bend radius of 30 mm for indoor fibers .
  • Keep fibers clean and free from dust or debris before termination .
  • Secure all fibers to prevent movement and mechanical stress, which can degrade signal quality . By following these steps, the optical fiber is properly inserted, protected, and connected within the fiber optic distribution box, ensuring reliable network performance.
