Calculating Total Link Loss
The total link loss is the sum of fiber attenuation, connector loss, and splice loss: Total Link Loss (dB) = Fiber Attenuation + Connector Loss + Splice Loss For example, a 10 km singlemode fiber link with 2 connectors and 1 splice at 1310 nm would have:
- Fiber loss: 0.5 dB/km × 10 km = 5 dB
- Connector loss: 0.75 dB × 2 = 1.5 dB
- Splice loss: 0.3 dB × 1 = 0.3 dB Total link loss = 5 + 1.5 + 0.3 = 6.8 dB .
Acceptable Loss Limits
Standards such as TIA-568.3-E define acceptable loss limits:
- Multimode fiber: Less than 3 dB/km at 850 nm is considered good.
- Singlemode fiber: Less than 0.5 dB/km at 1310 nm or 1550 nm is ideal . Excessive loss can result from dirty or damaged connectors, poor splicing, tight bends, or environmental factors, and should be checked using tools like an Optical Loss Test Set (OLTS) or OTDR .
