2. Stripping and Cleaning
Remove the protective coating from each fiber using a precision stripping tool, taking care not to damage the glass core. Typical strip lengths range from 10–20 mm depending on the splicer specifications. After stripping, clean the exposed fiber with isopropyl alcohol to remove dust, oils, or debris. Proper cleaning is critical, as even microscopic contamination can increase splice loss .
3. Cleaving
Use a fiber cleaver to create a flat, perpendicular end face on each fiber. The cleave should have an angle less than 0.5° and be free of chips or cracks. Ribbon fibers may require a ribbon cleaver to score multiple fibers simultaneously. A precise cleave ensures minimal insertion loss and optimal fusion quality .
4. Alignment
Place the fibers into the V-grooves of the fusion splicer, aligning the cores along the centerline. Modern splicers may use automatic core alignment or manual V-groove holders. Maintain balanced tension to avoid microbends or fiber breakage during the process .
5. Fusion Splicing
Activate the fusion splicer to generate an electric arc, which melts the fiber ends and fuses them together. For ribbon cables, mass fusion splicers can splice multiple fibers simultaneously. After fusion, inspect the splice for quality, often using the splicer's built-in loss estimation or an OTDR for verification .
6. Protective Finishing
Slide a protective sleeve or heat shrink tube over the splice to shield it from environmental factors such as moisture, dust, and mechanical stress. Heat the sleeve as required to secure the splice. Proper protection ensures long-term reliability and durability of the fiber connection .
7. Testing and Documentation
Test the completed splice using an OTDR to measure insertion loss and reflectance. For long cable runs, test from both directions and record traces for documentation. This step ensures compliance with industry standards and facilitates future maintenance or troubleshooting . Following this sequence carefully ensures low-loss, high-reliability fiber optic connections, whether splicing single fibers or high-count ribbon cables. Proper tools, clean handling, and adherence to manufacturer guidelines are essential for optimal results.
